"The Herd" Stops By Iowa City

On Tuesday Sept. 21, ESPN radio personality Colin Cowherd stopped by The University of Iowa as part of ESPN's first ever "Big Ten Road Trip." The trip included Cowherd broadcasting his radio program from Hubbard Park from 9 am to noon and televising his program "SportsNation" later that afternoon. While everyone was excited to see SportsNation, I was one of the few anxiously awaiting him to do his radio program.

I arrived at Hubbard Park around 8:45 am and there was a crowd of about 25 gathered to watch the broadcast. The small crowd offered us spectators a rare opportunity to watch one of the best in the business up close and personal. I vastly prefer the radio show to the television show because radio is a medium where a dynamic personality can communicate their views thoroughly due to the three hour show format. There are not a lot of glitz and gimmicks, in radio you truly have to be a good communicator to be successful. Cowherd has all the attributes and talent, which makes him one of the highest sports radio personalities in the country.

What made the experience worthwhile was that Cowherd took time during every one of his breaks to come and talk to the crowd. He also fielded dozens of questions from the audience during the three hours ranging from his opinions on the hot sports topics of the day to his career path to ESPN. When I mentioned earlier that it was an "up close and personal" experience, I truly meant it. That kind of intimate experience was not possible for the "SportsNation" broadcast when nearly a thousand showed up.

Iowa was chose along with Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan to be on the "Big Ten Road Trip." Hopefully the trip will make another stop in Iowa City soon.
