Media Putting Stock In Iowa Football

The Iowa Hawkeyes are currently ranked 15th in the initial BCS standings and are one of only three teams in the Big Ten that have not dropped a conference game. After back to back double-digit wins versus Big Ten opponents, the Hawkeyes are getting some love from college football media outlets.

The respected ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said on Sunday that the Hawkeyes are the 6th best team in college football and he projected them to win the conference. In ESPN.com's bowl projections, both Mark Schlabach and Andrea Adelson have the Hawkeyes making a BCS bowl game. Schlabach has Iowa playing Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and Adelson has Iowa playing Oregon in the Rose Bowl. CBS Sports is projecting that the 5-1 Hawkeyes will play Boise State in the Rose Bowl and said that they are the "favorite to win the Big Ten."

The confidence that the media has placed in Iowa this season may be refreshing for Iowa fans. Last season, when the Hawkeyes started off the year 9-0, most of the media dismissed the Hawkeyes as a team that was lucky and living on the edge, despite the fact that they were just winning games.

Many Hawk fans think that Iowa thrives in the underdog position. Many think that they love when nobody believes in them. Considering last year's impressive season that culminated in an Orange Bowl win, that could possibly be true. The roles have reversed this season as the media is behind the Hawks. My bet is that they rise to the occasion and keep winning.

"Black and Gold Spirit Night" a Success

Saturday’s Hawkeye football game versus #22 Penn State was officially declared “Black and Gold Spirit Day” by the University of Iowa. The concept behind it was to have alternating sections of people wearing all black or all gold apparel to give Kinnick a “striped” look when wide and aerial shots of the stadium would be seen on television. A press release from the University of Iowa said that they wanted to “provide a stunning image of the UI's prized Kinnick Stadium when ESPN pans the venue at kickoff.”

At first I was a little worried that the concept would not work. There are 70,585 people who fill Kinnick every Saturday. People come from all over the state and even the country to Iowa City for a Hawkeye game day and if some people did not get the memo, then it would not work.

The Hawkeyes have some of the best fans in the nation and they came through, as they always do. Kinnick looked absolutely stunning and unique during the entire broadcast on ESPN. I received numerous text messages from people during the game commenting on how they loved the colors in the stadium. Upon watching a rebroadcast of the game, ESPN had plenty of wide shots of the stadium that showed the colorful spectators inside Kinnick.

“Black and Gold Spirit Night” was a success in my book. Kudos to the Hawk fans for dressing in their colors and kudos to ESPN for their coverage of the game. I hope that there will be more "Black and Gold Spirit Days" in the future.

"The Herd" Stops By Iowa City

On Tuesday Sept. 21, ESPN radio personality Colin Cowherd stopped by The University of Iowa as part of ESPN's first ever "Big Ten Road Trip." The trip included Cowherd broadcasting his radio program from Hubbard Park from 9 am to noon and televising his program "SportsNation" later that afternoon. While everyone was excited to see SportsNation, I was one of the few anxiously awaiting him to do his radio program.

I arrived at Hubbard Park around 8:45 am and there was a crowd of about 25 gathered to watch the broadcast. The small crowd offered us spectators a rare opportunity to watch one of the best in the business up close and personal. I vastly prefer the radio show to the television show because radio is a medium where a dynamic personality can communicate their views thoroughly due to the three hour show format. There are not a lot of glitz and gimmicks, in radio you truly have to be a good communicator to be successful. Cowherd has all the attributes and talent, which makes him one of the highest sports radio personalities in the country.

What made the experience worthwhile was that Cowherd took time during every one of his breaks to come and talk to the crowd. He also fielded dozens of questions from the audience during the three hours ranging from his opinions on the hot sports topics of the day to his career path to ESPN. When I mentioned earlier that it was an "up close and personal" experience, I truly meant it. That kind of intimate experience was not possible for the "SportsNation" broadcast when nearly a thousand showed up.

Iowa was chose along with Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan to be on the "Big Ten Road Trip." Hopefully the trip will make another stop in Iowa City soon.

Iowa and Iowa State Both Shutout Their Opponents

On Saturday, both the Iowa Hawkeyes and their rival the Iowa State Cyclones shutout their opponents. #18 Iowa defeated Ball State 45-0 and Iowa State defeated Northern Iowa 27-0. This got me thinking, "When was the last time that Iowa and Iowa State both recorded a shutout win on the same Saturday?" According to data on http://cfbdatawarehouse.com, the last time it happened was on September 18, 1999. On that day, Iowa beat Northern Illinois 24-0 and Iowa State won at UNLV 24-0. This is only the second time this has happened since 1958!

Ball State had not been shutout in 61 straight games, which was the second longest non-shutout streak in school history. The Hawkeyes racked up 562 yards of offense, while Ball State could only muster 112 yards. Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi was 19 of 25 through the air with 288 passing yards and three touchdowns. Adam Robinson led the Hawkeyes on the ground, rushing for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. After the game, Robinson said, "I think I did okay to provide a spark for the offense, but I couldn't have done it without the offensive line."

Iowa's defense saw a big game from defensive lineman Mike Daniels, who had six tackles (four of them for a loss) and one sack. Linebacker Jeremiah Hunter said the defensive line "did everything today...I give them a lot of credit."

Iowa State's special teams came up big in their win over UNI. Cyclone kicker Grant Mahoney nailed two field goals, ISU blocked a UNI field goal attempt, and the Cyclones had a successful fake field goal that led to a touchdown later in the drive. The defense was also a focal point of the win, since ISU had two interceptions returned for touchdowns.

This Saturday, Iowa hosts Penn State and Iowa State hosts Texas Tech.

My "Big Ass Turkey Leg Guy" Video Featured on Every Day Should Be Saturday

A couple of years ago I did a video on Chuck Ford, who is better known as "The Big Ass Turkey Leg Guy." I have probably received more positive feedback on that video than any other video I have done. This guy is truly funny and a Kinnick Saturday is not complete unless you hear him screaming into his microphone selling his turkey legs at least once. It was recently featured on the popular college football blog Every Day Should Be Saturday. Here is the link to check it out on EDSBS (scroll down a bit to find the video, it was part of a feature they did on Iowa tailgating)
